Pinterest

Pinterest is a photo-sharing website that is a pinboard-style that was launched in 2010. It allows users to create theme-based image collection of interests, events, and more. After saving an image it can then be categorized into different boards.  Users can look at other pinboards and can “like” or “re-pin” images to their own pinboard. Users can then follow other users with similar interests. However, it is no longer required to request to join the site. The most popular categories are travel, cars, food, humor, home design, film, fashion, sports, and art. With 11.7 million unique users, Pinterest became the fastest site in history to break through the 10 million unique visitor mark. As of December 2011 the site gets an average of 11 million visits per week, with most of the sites users being female. Businesses are also allowed to create pages to promote the business online. They serve as the “virtual storefront.” On one case a user visiting Pinterest spent $180 and only $85 when using Facebook. Studies have shown that Pinterest, over all other forms of social media, is the most effective when driving sales.
